Christy Woodrow is a 44-calendar year-old travel blogger and gig employee dependent in San Diego. This is what the expertise has been like, in Christy’s own words and phrases.
I grew up with a father who has always owned his very own small business. I was born seeing that, which I actually value. All through my lifestyle, I have just been like, “I just can’t really see myself doing the job for another person else.” I labored for him for about five decades. And I was doing a good deal of bookkeeping, business management, mainly because it is a little something that I’m genuinely good at. And then from there, I began working as an impartial contractor and had distinctive bookkeeping gigs and stuff, which compensated the charges.
In college, I did some images. I was usually definitely intrigued in that and then writing, and so I just usually thought that was heading to be, like, my interest. I built a vacation site just for enjoyment and it was just before blogging was truly a point, and so I wasn’t creating any dollars. Then it just became my profession, and I experience truly fortunate that I was ready to do some thing that I love and be equipped to be imaginative. Of class the industry has transformed a great deal. Instagram arrived along, and AI and all types of factors. I come to feel like I’ve acquired so a lot of distinct skills, and so then it leads actually nicely to gig function. Partly I see opportunities wherever I’m like, hey a buddy needs web page operate. I adore the design aspect of that. I have form of just finished it on the aspect. But then with COVID, it’s turn out to be much more of a requirement.
The web page do the job is getting to be far more of a primary emphasis for me. So web structure, serving to organizations establish their brand. I do dwelling-sitting down. That is much more of a recent matter. I do Rover and referrals, so residence-sitting and doggy-sitting down. It performs properly, simply because I work remotely. But I’m kind of picky, in which it needs to be a position exactly where I can get do the job carried out. [Sitting] has been a few times a month lately, but it is additional repeat small business. And then I do catering, which is a lot more of a referral issue.
Previous 12 months, I was like, “Possibly I’ll glimpse for an additional career.” It is sort of exhausting to normally be thinking in which my future thing’s likely to come from and my small business getting so up and down. Perhaps it would be a lot less strain. I applied for some careers, but I’m really picky—I want distant do the job, and so does everybody else. So I truthfully cannot see myself heading again to that.
I started contributing to retirement when I was, like, 21. I didn’t do it every 12 months. There have been a lot of years that I didn’t. But I just essentially add to my possess. When my small business was executing effectively, I just did the max. I don’t have any person, clearly, matching it. And I do would like that I would have stayed on prime of it when I very first began it and just finished it each 12 months. And overall health insurance is pretty expensive. So, that was also a further factor where by I was like, “Ooh, working for anyone else, I could have wellbeing insurance.” I guess that’s why I have to continue to keep hustling.
